The Washington DC Chapter was one of the first chapters formed shortly after the inaugural 82nd Airborne Division Association Conference held in Chicago in 1947. The 1948 Paraglide listed Nicholas “Nick” Allen as the first Chairman of the National Capitol Chapter. With the close proximity of the Pentagon, the Washington DC Chapter grew quickly with many high-ranking charter members. The DC Chapter also had numerous World War I veterans among its ranks who served with the 82nd Division in the Great War. The DC Chapter would continue to grow rapidly over the years, hosting and supporting many local and national projects and endeavors.
In 1990, the Washington DC Chapter would take a leading role in planning the 50th Airborne Anniversary celebration and would host the 44th Annual 82nd Airborne Division Association Convention. To commemorate these events, the Association dedicated the 82nd Airborne Division Monument in Arlington National Cemetery, honoring those paratroopers “who made the supreme sacrifice to preserve freedom throughout the world.” The monument is located in Section 48, close to the amphitheater and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The Washington DC Chapter logo was designed in 1990 by DC Chapter member and World War II veteran – Dick Owens. Trooper Owens served with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment and jumped into Normandy. His design of the Chapter logo captures all the splendor of our Nation’s Capital to include the White House, U.S. Capitol, and the Washington and Lincoln Monuments, all surrounding the 82nd Airborne Division patch. A timeless design that is still proudly displayed on our Chapter stationary, shirts, and patches.
